I really like how Goh lifted Ash out of his slump by adopting Ash's "out of the box" tactics while Ash watched him battle Flygon and then reminded Ash afterward that he learned it from him, along with the "you can't just give up" attitude. My memory is kinda fuzzy here, but I think Dawn took a similar "soft" approach in helping Ash get back on his feet one time, as opposed to Misty/Serena, who both adopted a more... aggressive approach. To me, it feels like Goh/Dawn cared more about Ash's feelings, as opposed to Misty/Serena, both of which came across angrier Ash wasn't acting like the idealized version of the guy they had a crush on.
The episode Goh caught Flygon was such a good episode; not just for Goh, but also his bond with Raboot, as well as his relationship with Ash.
