I really think North Carolina would be a perfect set up for a region. The shape is great for a region, but there's plenty of things you could use for environment set pieces. Lots of island chains and huge sand dunes to the east, and mountains and caves to the west, and swamps, forests, and plains in the middle. All soaked in a southern theme.
Work in stuff like the local history and Setpieces of the Lost Colony, Pirate Ships, Plantations, Biltmore Estate, Tryon Palace, the First Flight at Kitty Hawk, the Fossil Museum, and it really comes together.
For animals there's also plenty to work with, like Venus Fly Traps, Wild Horses, Blue Ghost Flies, Megalodon, Cardinals, etc.
