>>53419149They're both contentious, it's just that there's a cult of personality that drowns out criticism by trying to force the "holy trinity" meme and pretending there aren't any flaws.
Plat is a slightly better version of D/P with an improved dex, more story and actual post-game but it's still on the same jank ass engine and full of the HM bloat. If you didn't like D/P to begin with, Plat really isn't saving it.
HG/SS is a gussied up version of Gold/Silver and every wart that came with their design ethos right down to Chikorita still being absolute garbage, the wild encounter/trainer levels falling off a goddamn cliff after Whitney and the absolutely retarded Retread Rocket plot. There is a fair bit of Gen IV's QoL added like the phys/special split and a bag system that doesn't suck but they also gated cross-gen evolutions until Kanto. And speaking on that, it's been marginally improved design-wise but you'll still be breezing through every trainer and gym in an hour tops. It's a really lackluster main game that gets propped up for "comfy" and trying to pretend its postgame facilities shamelessly lifted from Plat and a minigame arena carry everything when they really don't.
Tl;Dr Plat is marginally better but they're both overhyped. You want actual peak, you go for either B/W or B2/W2.
