I got one of the gen 1 titles for my 5th or 6th birthday and I hated it. I liked the toyline, the anime, the cards, and I even liked Stadium. But Pokemon RBY were hot garbage in my eyes. After Ash lost the Pokemon League I stopped watching the anime and I learned about other cool Pokemon-esque franchises like Digimon, Medabots, Monster Rancher, etc. Pokemon Gold was what brought me back into the series. I even gave the anime a second chance, (although I did regret it in the end).
My favorite Pokemon has to be Heracross. It was a bitch to find in gen 2 and even harder to catch. If I recall correctly it had a chance to flee in battle. I never caught one but I liked how much ass he kicked in the anime.
When FRLG was announced I was really hoping for a new region but just with a focus Kanto mons. The only reason I wasn't completely distraught by FRLG was because it gave me hope for a Johto remake next. The wait was long but it was well worth it.
Cursed Story: Out of all those monster-catching franchises from the 90s/00s, Pokemon is one of my least favorite, barring the most blatant and pathetic wannabe Pokemon-killers. Only reason I hold Pokemon above them all is because Pokemon has a more consistently good game series.
