Most of the time when no self-policing is encouraged and community goes without moderation to their discussions, such moderate posters end up losing interest with an increasingly angry community. At the end of this process you will find a brother to a hugbox community - a community so rife with spite that only a narrowed down range of opinions will be expressed.
Neither of these absolutes is good.
