I suppose the difference with May is the writers balanced her meek/indecisive moments with outgoing or temper prone moments, so May never felt overly girly or meek and wasn't overly tomboyish either. Sometimes it's hard to figure out what May's character trope was because she feels like a mix of everything depending on the episode.
