I don't have a problem Cap or Friede as characters but the Kanto-pandering is a bit excessive. Not particularly hung up on Liko or Roy getting their asses covered, but only making Friede and Cap do it is repetitive. Letting Orio or any of the other characters do that would give them time to shine as they have enough distinctions to warrant a notable variety in execution like the SM-versions of TRio's steals or approaches after the shake-up from XY.
I always keep in mind that Cap and Shillzard slapped on Friede are the KANTOO-rep to make up for the show seemingly attempting to tone down that spot in relevance any longer than it has to for the obligations of the suits. We can no longer escape Gen 1 pandering, since Gen 6 it will always be engraved whether it might be in the Merch, games, anime and other parts of the IP that I might have missed. If they can't milk the Kanto Region location-wise then it seems like the suits are telling them to make up for it by presenting more Kanto in other forms, which is what Friede became despite his inherently decent narrative and the Lapras creeping into Lucius-sama's reach as one of his trusted friends.
