In Gen 5, all the gym leaders have other jobs (which helps to introduce their personality more) and are intimately involved with the plot (except the Trio, but they might be the Shadow Triad).
They all help you beat Team Plasma, and at the end they show their personality pretty well. The especially memorable ones are Lenora, Burgh, and Clay; plus Skyla and Elesa were memorable because they were criminally too hot for kiddie game
In Gen 6, the only memorable one is Korrina who helped you with Mega Evo. The rest didn't really do anything. For example this guy Ramos, just stays in his gym, have like 4 lines and then you never see him again. The same with the first, second, fifth, and sixth gym leaders.
I don't understand why GF passes on the obvious formula that was working and instead give us shitty rivals
