Now stack on G-Max or Mega Evolution and suddenly Mewtwo doesn't seem so overpowered. Psychic is a non-issue given the vast majority of Psychic trainers just outright ignore its existence or the anime makes them job regardless. If Ash reserved using Mewtwo for big Hyper class battles I would see no real issue.

He's probably not getting Mewtwo now (although maybe later on in Journeys?) but the 'special guest' is shit evidence against the capture.
