There's been lots of competitors, they just don't have the media attention that Pokemon gets. The original Dragon Quest/Warrior Monsters was much better than the original Pokemon Red/Blue for instance, but didn't sell as well.
The graphics were better, it had a much better and fleshed out story, breeding was more advanced, combat was more advanced and the game had many more monsters to collect.
