>>48152928Original Red picks Bulbasaur (evidenced by most early concept art and his appearance in LGPE), and new Red picks Charmander (evidenced by official merch and most post-Gen-III spinoffs). I think Red with Bulbasaur was canon up until the release of FRLG, at which point they made Charmander canon due to its popularity. I vastly prefer Red with Bulbasaur and Green with Charmander because I think it suits them much more than the alternative, but unfortunately I think that was retconned with Gen III and Red and Charmander is canon.
