When I was a 9 year old and I just got pokemon yellow I liked Pikachu a lot. It wa my first starter and I grew really attached to the little guy.
I think by the time gen 3 came along I had become pretty neutral towards pikachu. Didn't mind it but wasn't enthused about it anymore. About 6 years ago I became more aware of gaming culture, and the concepts of "casuals" and "hardcores". I became aware of gen wunners, and those who claimed to be huge pokemon fans, but hadn't even played up to gen 2, let alone gen 4, nor heard of gen 5. It was a frustrating experience for me and I felt estranged. It was also during this time period when I started buying figures, looking at fan art, ect. For videogames in general but specifically pokemon.
It was at this moment I noticed the pikachu pandering. The gen 1 pandering. My personal favorites like Flygon, Drapion, hitmonlee, they all seemed to be scorned compared to the onslaught of pikachu pandering. The art, the figures, the favoritism, it all sickened me. I thought, "Pikachu isn't even a strong pokemon. Its not even fully evolved. The design isn't even that great. Why is this guy the face of a franchise I love? Why does it get all the attention". It wasn't like some edgy faggot rampage or anything but I developed a strong distaste for Pikachu and how it's bright light obscured the other pokemon.
Whenever someone brought up Pikachu, whenever some rando casually claimed Pikachu as their favorite pokemon I got irritated. I thought about all the other pokemon they could have possibly chosen. I thought about how they probably didn't know about any other pokemon. I thought about how it was insulting for someone like them to proclaim how big of a fan they were when much bigger fans existed. I thought, how can you claim to love pokemon when all you know is pikachu.
And now I don't really mind Pikachu. It is cute and I know I was just being a faggot shitter
But gen wunnersners are still awful
