Outside of their famous venomous bite, Komodo Dragons are known for their extremely durable chain-mail like scales, which happens to be reflected in Kommo-o's design. They also often fight by rising on their back legs and plowing into their opponent, which is why Kommo-o is seen on two legs in battle and walks on four (or well its knuckles) in its unreleased walking animations. There's an awful lot of Komodo dragon in Kommo-o, certainly more Komodo dragon than Ankylosaurus like Bulbapedia seems to think.
