You have to defeat them with a super effective move, within 5 rounds or by event depending on which characters, is a pain in the ass and if you don't pay attention, your army is full of shitters.
Like, at the beginning of the game is you with an Eevee and a chick with a Jigglypuff, and then a guy with a Charmander joins you, after that, there's like, only two other guaranteed good characters to join you.
Also, worth mentioning that the attacks don't necessarily mean the square ahead of your pokemon... friendly fire is also a thing
