You never heard of the terms regional bird, regional rodent, regional bug, etc?
The Darmanitan and Primape comparisons are semi-stretches. While they’re both ape-like pokemon with spherical bodies, Darmanitan has that body shape for a good reason. The human-like face of the Daruma would translate better on a ape-based design. I don’t think they would design it as a Primape reskin in mind.
