On some level they know that they fucked up and wish for a fresh start, yet they don't have the balls to go with it. "Sonic Generations" might have broken the infamous 'Sonic cycle', yet they are sliding back to their mush.
On a semi-related note: Am I the only one who considers Sonic as a character to be more repulsive than the cookie-cutter aberrations from SA2 and Sonic2006? A bastard child of Mickey Mouse and Felix the Cat with an 'attitude' never struck me as something I'd want to play as.
