100% of the problems other than difficulty stem from how far back GameFreak recoiled after Gen 6. You can say what you want about Kalos as a region but Gen 6's engine is a comparative gold-mine of features and detail that should easily be in the newer games but isn't out of sheer lack of ambition.
You could use moves that would destroy terrain and give you items in Gen 6, that's literally only one step away from making permanent marks on the battlefield scene as it already had to track the removal of the item.
