the protag not being a fucking silent autist for once also definitely helps a lot, you actually get to interact with characters now which makes it easier to grow attached to them
compare this to XY where you immediately have a huge friendgroup that keeps fellating you about how you're the coolest bestest friend ever even though you barely interact with them
in SV they are all strangers to you at first until you interact with them and get to know them more closely until you become friends. it makes a huge difference
to me SV was the first game that actually felt like an adventure with my friends, something that the previous games tried but never really worked because the characters had very one dimensional writing and/or were just really annoying lol
