I don't get what the fuss is, during the Orange Islands there were a few shippy moments (mostly jealousy) between Ash and Misty starting with the blimp episode where James accuses them of eloping, I assume it was to build up to Misty's story line in the 2nd film or something?
4kids sprinkled... well, dolloped more moments in the dialog, but for the most part it was there in the original too.
Jhoto had like... one jealousy episode during the Silver Conference and then they dropped Misty from the series and moved on without her.
Ash is the hero of the series, he needs to have girls fawning over how cool he is every series so the little boys watching will respect his harem and cool battle skills.
