In Cynthia's case, she has a historian side profession, helping the trainer research the Sinnoh mythology, as well as playing a role in the climax of Platinum. She certainly did more than Wallace <- (fucking lol) Steven, or even Lance did as far as "character" & character involvement" are concerned, yet I don't see anyone trying to toss them into a wheelchair. She also does more than Iris after her, arguably Diantha too. Alder actually did have good character involvement, so I'll leave him out of this.
You could expand on her character via her hometown and village, as well as her "implied" home region wherever she implied in Platinum. Actual character exposition, no wheelchairs required.
