The RSE Protagonist is actually more of a "rival" than the other two supposed rivals. But a sort of "teaching" rival; he/she wants to see Brendan/May and Wally improve as a trainer and one day best him/her in battle, but doesn't squander his/her own potential or pull any punches. The Protagonist fought on to become Champ because it was both a personal challenge and learning experience, and sets an even higher goal for the "rivals" to strive for. Sort of like Rald in the Battle Frontier manga.
