Back then I simply enjoyed it, though now I like to examine them from a game design/worldbuilding perspective. I do wish the games were better, but I've enjoyed even the games I thought were bad. That element of fantasy escapism will always be there.
The only thing that really saddens me is all my friends who love Pokemon have become bitter and disinterested in the series, so there's been little to no multiplayer fun
