If a Pokémon looks to appeal primarily to female fans, I refer to it as a male. (Disregarding furfags, gender ratios, and the like).
Example with the Eevee line:

Eevee: Male
Vaporeon: Female
Jolteon: Male
Flareon: Male
Espeon: Female
Umbreon: Male
Leafeon: Female
Glaceon: Female
Sylveon: Female

Quite a discrepancy I hope to see addressed in Gen 8.
