They ditched Megas because as a concept it's inherently limited and forces players into a limited set of options. They're antithetical to Pokemons design.

Dynamax is meant to be a mega-like mechanic that can work with any Pokemon. If you can find a way to present a Pokemon powering up that wouldn't take an absurd amount of development resources on a per-Pokemon basis AND that can apply to all 900+ unique Pokemon models that isn't as simple as "make them bigger and angry" then please, name it.
