even discounting the lack of pun in the second movie's thing, it still makes reference to a "great controller" that's gonna calm down "god", and yeah i guess technically any halfway decent idiot trainer that stumbled upon those islands at that exact time could have fit the bill, ash was the only one with enough dumb luck to get the magic balls and fulfill the prophecy, not to mention the king of the sea thing, his prominence with greninja in olympia's more recent prophecy
more to the point he looks almost exactly like red, has the same rough origins as red, and that would probably give red more reason to be belligerent towards him. plus, red actually won his league, ash didn't, and seeing a mirror of yourself fail to achieve your dreams or address the issue of your shared nemesis would rankle anyone. sociopath though? nah, red's a straight-up hero. even if he's more pragmatic than ash
