It doesn't matter which pokemon you pick since the game is easy as long as you make sure to bring different types of move in your moveset!
But if you reaaly want to powergame:
Pikachu and Treecko are ridiculously overpowered, both have access to agility, Pikachu to discharge and Treecko to bullet seed. One of them will carry an entire run easily, putting both on one team will obliterate everything in sight. They both have very strong early game options too with quick attack. It doesn't matter which one you play as and which one is your partnerBut heed my advice: Go with whatever pokemon you like best, you do not need to grind or powergame in the slightest to beat this game, just make sure your moveset is varied and prepare your bag with Apples and Max Elixirs
and reviver seeds if you're a casual.
P.S. remember to play the special episodes either when they become available or after the credits, they add a lot to the story.
