Why are people so keen to its the point on purpose? I don't get it.

The complaint about new gen vs old gen aesthetic has nothing to do with looking like actual animals or not, the complaint is the shift in the art style. Most notably how the design is rendered. Fennekin and Vulpix come to mind. Yes it's a fennec fox, I'm aware, but that's not the argument. The argument is that newer designs don't have as much of an emphasis on bodies with complex contoured forms and are round and simple for the sake of simplicity.
Other comparisons: Pidgey and Fletchling, Vulpix and Zorua, Magikarp and Finneon. Don't pay attention to whether or not these Pokémon are analogues, pay attention to how they're rendered.
90s monster design aesthetic is way different from today. Is it bad? Opinion. But stop fucking misrepresenting others' arguments so you can fall back on the "lol Magnemite Voltorb Muk xD" argument.
