MMO developers don't like taking risks because of the gargantuan amount of time it takes to make features work in an MMO environment, so the large majority of them just play it safe and either stick to what they know or go along with popular trends. It's one of the main reasons we got so many World of Warcraft clones in the MMO market throughout the late 00s/early-mid 10s - they're simply following what's popular, but come several years late because of how long it takes to make an MMO's engine, content, and so on.
