Drawing and art is seen as a more girly hobby for children, so I think girls might be encouraged more when they draw when they are little. Or maybe they just find it more appealing than boys do. So it's a skill they might invest more time into.
Then there's the fact that women in general tend to care more about beauty. Not just) their own, in general. Fashion, nature, art, interior design, stuff like that. Generally speaking, men and women just have different tastes and slightly different ways of understanding things. They also tend to be more emotional than men, which also changes how they express themselves artistically.
But even then, as you said yourself, you usually can't tell if an artist is male or female just by looking at it. You can make an educated guess sometimes, but you can never tell 100% for sure. I definitely guessed wrong with a few artists.
In the end I wouldn't even say female artists make "better" art, it's just kinda different. And I'm sure there is male artists that make "typically female" art and vice versa. It's pretty subtle differences. Humans are complex like that.
