>>49080082Take picrel for instance. This is the Scholar’s Mate, a very common mate among beginner players. It is very easy to refute if Black knows what he is doing, and invariably puts Black in the better position if he knows the counterplay.
A normal person who falls victim to the Scholar’s Mate thinks “Damn, I really should think of a way to prevent this.” And he does, by moving his g pawn to block the queen’s line of sight to the f7 pawn.
A smogon council member after falling prey to this noob trap gets angry at White for outplaying him. “Why should the Queen be allowed to checkmate me in 3 moves?” he says, completely ignoring the obvious counterplay and how the Scholars Mate leads to a better game for Black. Rather than adapt to the threat to his f7 pawn, the Smogon council member thinks the Queen is overpowered, and begs for her to be banned.
the analogy basically means smogon council members cant adapt to threats, and instead they would rather ban the thread than actually learn how to deal with it.
