For a little while I was actually wondering if Serena/Calem were actually going to have some development of their own by joining up with Team Flare. It felt like it would have matched with their increasing disappointment about getting stomped by you, with Flare offering them a Mega Ring so that they could try match up. It would give them an excuse to have some more Mega Evolution in fights, which were sorely underused in the game in practice, as well as an actual arc for the character.
But unfortunately XY left a lot to be desired with payoffs.
I like to think Shauna got what she wanted at the end of the day at least
