I'm talking about a kid on a blind/first playthrough.But anon, when i was a kid and first played blindly, i understood i had to get a team that would properly cover all typings. It didn't take me long to have a full team before the first or second gym depending on which generation it was. A defeat was good because you could just grind on the person kicking your ass since there was no drawbacks unless you didn't spend any money before hand. Even then most fight can be done without items
