That's another Millennial thing too, where does the "realism" of anime characters actually come from? Is it having basic-proportioned, humanoid characters? Cause if that's the case, then it just sounds like that's the byproduct of growing up with "wacky" animation exclusively, even skipping out all the good action cartoons from the 90s.
Is it the facial features? Cause if we're talking high-budget, 80s/90s OVAs then I can see the point, but if we're talking about 2000s-onwards weekly or even seasonal animation then I would say anime characters, on average, have actually LOST real facial depth over time, and are slowly sliding into minimalist, flat-faced (both figuratively and literally) faces plastered on bodies that are drawn with greater depth. The average 2010's anime character face straight up looks like they draw singular dots for noses and the faces from 3/4 angles often don't even have contours anymore.
