That approach fell to the wayside in the 90s, partly because it was overtaken by more campaign-specific blitzes like DKC/Play it Loud, and later Pokemon/GBC/Funtastic, and then abandoned during Iwata's "it's all about the games" initiative. It was during the Wii U's slump era that we saw a reversal, with them reviving the "World of Nintendo" brand for the Jakks Pacific toyline and making their own in-house toys like amiibo and the various Pokemon Go peripherals. Even now, with their games business the best its ever been, they're still sticking to that approach with products like Alarmo or the talking wonder flower.
