>>44290638Personally I view it the opposing way. Normally you would want to befriend your pokemon and occasionally battle them and get them that way. In a TTRPG where you can actually do roleplaying, I'd sooner roleplay a way to get a pokemon than waste time battling one like its the video games. If that's gonna be my normal method of capturing stuff, then I'll just go play the video game where Pokemon don't have any agency or honest personality. There is a place for trial by combat, that's happened before, as you mentioned some Pokemon don't want to just be hugged and kindly offered the possiton and would want a battle to test you or your team, so it happens. But its more fun to have an honest roleplay scenario that builds out the personality of a pokemon and its trainer.
The anime's been doing that a lot more recently wish Ash and its a step in the right direction. Captures are no longer "I beat up the Pokemon then throw a pokeball at it and now its mine." its been more helping them with something or making a strong impression to befriend them and ask if they'd like to join. I feel they are doing this because Pokemon are displaying more complex emotions nowadays so its getting harder to just do that simple Fight into Capture thing for each one of them and it gives the Pokemon a bigger sense of personality.
