The thing that gets me about them choosing Mauville of all places is that Lilycove has all the hallmarks of being a "landmark" for the region without all the bloat (like Goldenrod being the big city in Johto to contrast all the rural sticks and oldschool architecture).

It only makes sense. Even the Japanese anime OP makes the point of Minamo (Lilycove) being an important locale.
What's more annoying is that Mauville is a relatively simple town to drive home the theme of Wattson fucking up his plan of modernizing and making New Mauville which also ties into the "living with nature" feel a good chunk of the region like Fallarbor, Fortree and the water towns have. Turning it into a successful mall city misses the entire point.
