What's funny is I don't care about gender when in my in-game team, or for anything else for that matter. But since I have the choice when breeding, and since I'm going all the way to getting a pentaperfect one, I will only be satisfied with a male hatched Pokemon.
Another thing I do when playing through the main story of the game is all my Pokemon have to be of the same level. When a Pokemon goes one level higher than the rest of the team, I simply keep him outside of battles entirely until the rest of the team also catches up to that level.
This also translates into me usually using Pokemon disadvantageous to the Gym type with the Gym's regular trainers. That way, the Pokemon at a disadvantage earn more experience and compensate for when I get to the Gym leader and I actually use a Pokemon with an advantage, again, keeping the levels as even as possible.
