imo Sugimori cards mostly looked good until the gen 3 cards rolled around. I think what made those worse (other than Sugimori's art style changing) is the shitty white splash effect they would put behind the Pokémon that made the artwork look even more shooped. The whole appeal of Sugimori cards up until that point, at least to kid me, was that it felt like the Pokémon were coming to life almost, because of those realistic backgrounds and how they would sometimes be arranged within them (

Some of them were real kino, like the unnumbered Murkrow promo picrel.
