In short its no surprise Gyarados 1 shot him (which he didn't as he got up immediately unscathed just outside), Charizard was probably ready to pass out.
Btw Squirtle was in the move, just on a news reel as firefighters but they offer nothing to the plot like Bulbasaur or Charizard
