It's partly because of the shorts and shoes/boots that are much more suited to trekking across long wilderness trails, biking, climbing, etc. Hilda's baseball cap sets her apart from all the other female protagonists (normally reserved for the boys), and May's bandana is also more outdoorsy and cool.
