The reason is because squares (and rectangles) have 90 degrees at every vertex, so any dihedral angle (angle formed by two adjacent faces) that isn't 90 degrees literally couldn't fit a square. That's not saying it's impossible with quadrilaterals in general, but it's trivial to just slice those in half to triangles anyway.
