I was thinking about the games when i had a bit of a mindfuck moment, both pokemon are based off the same pokemon, and have shockingly similar traits. so i put up a propisition, Wimpod is Kabuto's Ancestor. think about it. Both evolutions become bipedal predators with sharp claws, and Kabutops 'hands' seem to have developing claws beside the extended blade-like limb.
