Is Yu-Gi-Oh really that much simpler? There's a bunch of stuff with phases and whatnot that makes it complex as well, though thinks like Syncro summons and XYZ summons hadn't been invented yet. I'll definitely give you the show, though; I honestly liked both. Yu-Gi-Oh cards can have some pretty amazing illustrations, and they're almost always really detailed. It's impressive. I love the style of the old Pokemon cards, though, and these days they also have some pretty great artwork.
