-There have been cases of artists being harassed by Westerners after their doujinshi were uploaded to public reading sites.
-Nintendo/TPC has only recently loosened their restrictions on distribution of derivative content, and there may still be a fear of getting in trouble with them somehow.
-Most doujinshi artists barely break even with sales; they print to share their ideas with other fans of the character/pairing.
-Some artists are just genuinely mentally ill (obviously).
Personally I'm guilty of ripping/scanning doujin works but, like another person said, I only share them on 4chan because the chance of it being spread elsewhere is very low and it's more like sharing within a group of "friends".
