Have his rivalries with Gary, always bump into Jessie, James and Meowth rather than be a "master".
I like the underdog approach and feel it would work better for him. Him being a "champion" sorta takes away from it, his down-to-earth personality.
It'd be even better for some trainers to like underestimate him, then Ash turns his hat and whips their ass to show he's still got it. Idk, just thinking out loud I suppose.
