They're beings of data. You can have frog with a trumpet on its neck, a kung-fu werewolf, literal golden turds, nightmarish beings that look like they got lost on the way to the next SMT game, someone combining Super Robots, pic related, etc. Some will and have looked similar to Pokemon since the franchise's beginning, like Slowpoke and Shellmon.
