They wanted to talk about war, overpopulation and human greed, but without actually developing them as issues within the world. You're never really exposed to those sorts of social dilemmas. Most of XY is just this cozy little romp with your friends. Lysandre's motivation is fundamentally at odds with the idealistic world that the Pokemon series typically presents.
