When you are used to modern conventions, these games just doesn't hold up very well today. All the small things like just having generic small icons for each pokemon. Yeaah, that one is roughly "beast" shaped. Good enough for 1996, but doesn't hold water in 2019.
And I say this as someone who played the shit out of those games.
