Apparently Royal Darkness ARE good guys even though they constantly attacked me throughout the game.
Entei was blocking my path and I battled it; after save scumming a thousand or so Ultra Ball tosses, I just killed it.
Get to Sootopolis clone (they didn't even change the layout), Ash and my brother are hanging around, I go into the cave, catch Groudon.
I leave the cave, and THEN the cutscene involving Ash and my brother plays with their invisible sprites. That's a common thing, easily avoidable scripts.
Going to the 8th Gym now.
