Johtofag here, everything after gen 5 is trash. 2-4 were best, gen 1 was alright, and gen 5, despite having some really shitty monster designs, had some really killer things. The gyms in BW2 were really impressive and the PWT/White Treehollow are some quality postgame that we're never gonna see again.
Sinnoh could have been amazing if all the legends besides Giratina weren't really shitty. The pixies are boring as fuck and Dialga and Palkia are pretty ugly, but serviceable. Giratina and Darkrai are neato though. Of course, Darkrai is locked behind a stupid event, fuck you GF.
Hoenn was cool, even if the water routes desperately needed more monster and trainer variety. All of the legends were really well designed and the golem trio are some of the coolest legends out there. It had it's flaws, like May and Wally being super lame rivals with barely any personality outside of Wally getting braver.
All that said, HeartGold will always be my favorite. Love the Battle Frontier, love getting both a Kanto and Hoenn starter in post game, love all the legends to catch, Ho oh being my favorite. Plus rebattling old Kanto gyms is great fun to me, they're some of my favorites, particularly Blaine.
XY are my least favorite. I replayed it like 4 times, can barely remember anything about it. Lame gyms, SUPER lame evil team, and holy fuck, the worst rivals on the planet. Fuck XY.
